  1. But if the people wearing college rings are in the class of people as the ones who wore a high school letterman’s jacket, that implies they’re in the elite! (At least, judging by _my_ high school 45 years ago.)

    1. No not really. For example, say the person wearing the college ring can’t read but still graduated (I know these people). How are they in the elite?

      Then comes the definition of what you mean by “elite”? If the college ring wearing person is working for a company, I hardly call that elite. But yes, you could say they’re elite compared to a high school letterman jacket wearing nut. I class these two together because the same mentality rules both (trying to show something pointless off).

  2. I read a couple of your articles and viewed some of your videos. I salute your hustle! However, I have to disagree with your thoughts on people wearing college rings as being stupid and how you can ‘buy yourself a degree’. I think you are over generalizing. Just because the people you have associated with doesn’t mean all. I do agree there are probably some universities which are diploma mills, but you can’t make blanket statements.

    There are valid reasons people college rings. First, some of them worked extremely hard to get educated and to them it is a point of pride. Second, many wear the ring to show support. This is no different then, let’s say, a Dallas Cowboys fan wearing Cowboy paraphernalia. Third, many of the more well know and larger universities have deep professional network of alumni (business owners, CEOs, etc…). They try to show they graduated from the university so they have some kind of connection to those alumni. You will be surprised how many founders of companies and C-level officers tend to bring in alumni.

    There are other reasons, but my main argument is that you are making blanket statements. By the way, I don’t wear any college rings even though I graduated from one of the more well-known universities in the country.

      And I do agree, everyone has their reasons for wearing a college ring. Just like people who wear their high school letterman jackets do. Although the reasons are different (CEO’s, alumni, etc) as compared to the high schooler, there is an underlying issue. The issue is supporting college in the first place. College, to be clear, trains people to go to work for companies. Colleges also raise tuition every year at rates above inflation. On top of that, how is it, with technology (online classes etc) which make courses cheaper, colleges still increase tuition? Bullshit.

      On top of all of this, are professors and everything else college implies. Here’s an example: Let’s say that you graduated from your top college and went on to start a multi-billion dollar company. Great. Now what? Now, one of the professors who taught you in college is going to come to the forefront, telling newspapers, alumni, etc, that they taught you all these things about business and as a result, you’re successful because they showed you how to be.

      As far as making blanket statements, I’ll give you this. It’s rather more of a heuristic, or rule of thumb. They may not be correct in all cases, but they are in the majority of cases.
